Our Story

Tanaka Tissue Technologies started with a simple trip.

Right after high school, my friends and I took a break before diving into college and adult life. We headed to Mexico, where a hike through the Sierra Madre mountains changed everything. That’s where I first saw them-tough little plants growing straight out of the rocks. Pinguicula, or butterworts. The locals called them matamoscas-fly killers.

I was hooked. Back home in my garage, I started growing them, experimenting, and eventually diving into tissue culture. What began as a hobby turned into a passion, and that passion grew into a small business.

Today, Tanaka Tissue Technologies is all about growing rare and resilient plants in a sustainable way-making them accessible to collectors, growers, and anyone who appreciates something a little different.

What Is Tissue Culture?

Tissue culture is a clean and science-based way of growing plants from tiny pieces of tissue-kind of like cloning, but for plants! At Tanaka Tissue Technologies, we use this method to grow beautiful, healthy plants in a sterile environment, free from pests and disease.
Each plant starts its life in a nutrient-rich flask, where it develops strong roots and vibrant leaves. This process helps us produce consistent, high-quality plants that are ready to thrive in your home, garden, or display.
Whether you’re a collector or just love unique greenery, tissue culture ensures you’re getting plants that are resilient, sustainable, and stunning.

How Do Our Plants Catch Bugs?

At our shop, we love showing people how amazing Pinguicula and other Carnivorous Plants are! These clever little plants attract insects with their glistening, sticky leaves that look almost like dew drops. When a bug lands, it gets trapped in the goo, and the plant slowly releases enzymes to digest it — turning pests into nutrients! It’s nature’s own pest control, and a fascinating, low-maintenance companion for any plant lover.
